Why Psychics both Fascinate & Frighten us

So you call yourself a Psychic...​
I have an on-going struggle identifying myself as a Psychic Medium. Yes, I have an ability that helps me to see how future events are likely to unfold and yes, I also have an ability to see through the “veil” and connect with spirit guides but I find more comfort in calling myself an Intuitive Advisor. That is the title that speaks more to what I actually do. Granted the title Psychic Medium has its advantages because, let’s face it, it makes me  more searchable on Google  where there are millions of people desperately typing those keywords into their search bars hoping to find answers to their uncertain love lives, stagnated careers, and low bank accounts. Quite honestly, I do believe I have the ability to help these people when they stumble upon my website so that isn’t a bad thing. I suppose that learning to accept the title psychic medium is an important piece of my professional journey. That being said, it is unfortunate that there is a huge market on “Need to Know Now” and it has been fully capitalized on by some less than scrupulous individuals. In fact, many so-called “psychics” have gained a reputation for taking the last dollar out of a poor person’s pocket, making a mess of this job title with their misguided intentions and sleazy tactics. It leaves me with this BIG task of rebuilding trust and breaking through the misconceptions people have about my profession before I can even get to the real work of helping them.

Being psychic means I am always engaging with people from extreme ends of the spectrum of fascination and fear. It is my hope that I can show them that there is an approach that lies somewhere in the middle which I like to call healthy curiosity. Healthy curiosity is where the magic happens in the client-psychic relationship but that is material for another blog post. For now I’d like to speak to the common misconceptions about the work we “psychics” do.

First let’s look at what I see as misguided intrigue. There are those who call or visit me who are completely fascinated about predicting the future. They want details…the when, the who, the how. Some even like to “test” me to give them exact names and dates. While I know it is natural to want to prove or disprove psychic ability because it is something so intangible, I work hard to bring my clients to a better understanding of my role as an Intuitive Advisor. My job is to present my clients with intuitive impressions and spirit guidance for the purpose of helping them to create the happy, fulfilling lives. Yes, sometimes names and dates come to me but sometimes they do not. When I do receive these specifics there are times I feel it is important to share them, but typically I prefer to downplay their significance in favor of the insights that inspire real life transformation. So, while I cannot always tell that their great aunt’s name was Eleanor, her favorite color was green, and she died from a stroke in 1975, I can always bring to light insights and a deeper awareness of what is preventing my client from getting that love, career, health and abundance they want and deserve …sometimes these insights come through as advice I am receiving from their loving, concerned Aunt Eleanor and sometimes through other means. Often these insights also reveal unique ways that my client can manifest that perfect partner, ideal job, or big dream faster…minus the uncomfortable detours.

Unfortunately, many psychics throughout time have done a great disservice to those of us who take tremendous strides in integrity. They have led people to believe two dangerous things. The first is that they have a special gift that is unattainable for others. The second is that the future predictions they provide are destined and unchangeable. Combined, these two things lead people to either idolize or reject those of us with psychic ability. As a result, there remains this perpetual air of mystery and fear associated with my profession.

A good psychic knows enough to explain to his or her client that what may appear to be a “special gift” is actually an ability that we all have and can further develop. Just like some are born with more of an innate athletic ability while others gain it through persistent practice, the same is true of intuition. While the intuitive muscle is more innate for some the potential is there for anyone to strengthen and use it effectively in their own life.

The work one does with a psychic should not go on indefinitely. A good psychic knows how to open their client’s mind and direct them to their own power. To do this the psychic shows his or her client what is possible by sharing insights about the energy blocks, patterns, and wonderful possibilities they see for their clients who cannot yet see for themselves. Then, if the psychic truly has integrity, he or she will work with that person to develop their own intuitive abilities to the point that the psychic is no longer needed. If you are working with a psychic who keeps taking your money and not encouraging you to grow in this way, they do not have your best interest at heart.

Now let us move on to another reason so many people are hesitant to seek the assistance of a psychic. Frankly, a lot of us are afraid to hear what the future may hold for us. I can completely respect this fear. People often avoid coming to me when they could really use my help because they don’t want to hear anything “scary” about their future. Their prior experiences with psychics or the experiences their friends have had led them to believe that I might tell them of some unavoidable tragedy that lies ahead. They imagine themselves losing many nights sleep in constant worry until that “predicted” event happens. Some even come telling me that a previous psychic told them they were cursed (and often the psychic asked a hefty fee for the removal of said curse). This infuriates me!

Oh, the damage-control I need to do after people come to me following readings from psychics who are ignorant to the fact that peoples’ minds, especially during times of stress, are very impressionable and should be handled with utmost care. We must take every caution not to convey information in a way that frightens, and can in fact actually create unwanted circumstances through what is commonly known as self-fulfilling prophecy. It is so very dangerous to imply that a person has no control over their future. We are creators, always attracting our circumstances into existence through the Law of Attraction. Since many of us are unaware that we are creating on this level I believe it is the professional’s responsibility to teach and a complete misuse of intuitive ability to suggest a client has no control in what is developing in their lives.

This isn’t to say that I cannot see future paths for my clients. Just that I do not see any one particular path as “set in stone.” Rather, an insight about the future presents as the “most likely” course in that moment in time and space. I often use the analogy of looking at the starry night sky from one’s back yard versus front yard. Depending upon which door we exit out of our vantage point and our view changes. Different stars appear in our sight, some more visible than others. Naturally, the brightest stars grab our focus. It is because of this focus that the brightest stars come to represent our more probable future experiences. They appear so obvious that we continue to give them our attention. We can however choose at any time to change our direction therefore taking in a different view of the sky and drawing our focus to a completely different cluster of stars, again with some stars brighter than others.

This is how I present the future when insights come to me. I am reading the future from the client’s current energetic standpoint. What is it that they are attracting? What are they expecting for their future from both the conscious and subconscious levels? I recognize that the client has control of which part of the starry sky he or she wishes to gaze upon and that direction will determine the potentials that lie ahead. If, with my intuitive abilities, I see potentials that appear unfavorable, frightening, or harmful for my client then it is my duty to gently show them how to change their direction. It is completely unethical to send them home with a sense of doom. Yes, I do believe some human lessons need to be learned but I know they can be learned with grace and ease. There is always free will. My role, as I see it, is to help my clients avoid pain and suffering in their journey towards growth by showing them alternative paths that lead to the most favorable outcomes.   

On accepting this path...
Both the fascination and the fear I encounter in people can be exhausting at times. It is why I truly believe it when I hear other intuitives say that they did not pick this career path rather it those them. Our professionalism is often called in to question, our abilities tested and scrutinized, and our intentions judged by those who don’t even attempt to really understand what we do. I have attended countless dinner parties at which I find myself avoiding the awkward question of “What do you do for work?” While I am not ashamed or embarrassed by my work I choose not to engage in the fascination of those wanting me to predict their futures over cheese and crackers or endure raised eyebrows and sideways glances by those who fear I am just some oddball stranger trying to read their minds. I am proud of my career, I know I have helped many, many people, but in these brief encounters it is extremely difficult to educate people on exactly what it means to be psychic. Perhaps that is why I write blog posts like this… to reach those who seek a true understanding of the service I provide and how it can and does heal lives…and so that I can go to those parties to laugh and drink wine like the rest of them.
